Manabe looking for Japan women's team to have strong motivation

Japan took the bronze medal at last year's World Grand Champions Cup

Tokyo, Japan, May 19, 2014 – The Japan women’s national team have started their preparations for the 2014 season and major competitions such as the Montreux Volley Masters 2014, the Yeltsin Cup 2014, the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix and FIVB Women's World Championship Italy 2014.

Coach Masayoshi Manabe, who led Japan to the bronze medal at the FIVB World Grand Champions Cup last year, has selected 31 players to work with this year.

“We will join the World Championship in Italy and might have to play 13 games in three weeks during the competition,” Manabe pointed out. “It’s likely to be very hard for us, but we will try and get a nicer colour medal than before. To help us get on the podium at the World Championship, we also want to do our best in the World Grand Prix, which will be held one month before the World Championship starts. We want to keep our motivation high for the World Championship.”

Japan captain Saori Kimura commented: “With the theme [Challenging for World’s No.1], I personally want to develop my power and physical endurance. Last year, I focused too much [on doing stuff for the team as captain], so this year I also want to focus on myself and play against opponents with power.”

To kick off their 2014 season, the team will have a training camp in Japan until May 24 before leaving for the Montreux Volley Masters 2014.
