Beating Japan wasn't easy: Brazil coach Ze Roberto

Brazil coach Jose Roberto Guimaraes

Sapporo, Japan, August 29, 2013 – Brazil won their second match of the FIVB World Grand Prix Finals on Thursday, beating Japan 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-17) at Hokkaido Prefectural Sports Center. Brazil coach Jose Roberto Guimaraes said Brazil didn’t have it all their own way.

Brazil coach Jose Roberto Guimaraes: It was not an easy game. Japan have good technique and concentration and a good variety of combinations. They are good at seeking out our weak points and attacking them, so it was hard to win today.

(Re. Japan players): I like Kimura and Ebata and Nagaoka is powerful and has good technique. Shinnabe is also a good player.

(Re. Gabriela Guimaraes): She’s only 19 but has good concentration and motivation. She practices very hard and will be an important player for Brazil in the future.

Brazil captain Fabiana Claudino: At first, we couldn’t follow our game plan, especially on reception and blocking, but gradually we got into our rhythm and were able to win.

Brazil libero Fabiana Oliveira: It’s always difficult to play against Japan because of their reception and speed – and it was a home game for them which made it tougher for us. In the beginning, we found it hard to score but we were able to catch up in the end. It was an important game for us, so I’m really happy to win.

Japan coach Masayoshi Manabe: We were OK up to the second technical timeout but then we started dropping points as Brazil improved its block. There’s a big difference between Japan and Brazil because the Brazilians are so tall and have longer arms; this difference is especially noticeable in spiking and blocking.

Japan captain Saori Kimura: After we got to about 20 points, we lost our rhythm and then the sets. Also, they didn’t make hardly any errors. They were very confident. We’re trying to build a new team and will try to catch up with Brazil.

Japan No. 14 Yukiko Kimura: I made a lot of mistakes so I need to practice more. Blocking was their strongest point and they were very confident, but we played well as a team.
