Korea beat Thailand 3-1 at home in Pool B

Korea celebrate after winning a point against Thailand

Hwaseong, Korea, August 01, 2014 - Korea beat Thailand 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-20) in their first World Grand Prix 2014 Pool B match, led by captain Kim Yeon-Koung who scored a game-high with 29 points.

Key Points

•     This is Korea 17th World Grand Prix participation. They were present in only three of the past seven World Grand Prix.

•     The win is only the second time in their past seven participations that Korea have won their opening fixture.

•     It is the fourth time Korea and Thailand have met in the World Grand Prix, with Korea now holding a 3-1 advantage.

•     Thailand's best finish in the World Grand Prix is fourth place, achieved in 2012.

•     Korea's best result at a World Grand Prix is third, achieved in 1997. They have reached the Final Round five times.

Thailand started the better of the two sides, enjoying a 15-9 lead in the first set. Korea were able to work their way back into the set though and with Kim Yeon-Koung warming up nicely, they tied the scores at 18-18.

Korea and Thailand traded blows for the next 10 points until Thailand finally took the ascendancy from a 23-23 scoreline, to win the first set 25-23.

Onuma Sittirak scored eight points for the visitors while Ajcharaporn Kongyot chimed in with six points. For Korea, Kim scored seven in the first set, with three of those coming from service.

The hosts started the second set well and after being 2-0 up, they stretched it to a 16-12 lead. Kim continued to fire for Korea and scored eight points in the set as they levelled the match at one-set a piece.

The third set was fairly one-sided as Korea pushed to a 7-2 lead, before going on to win it 25-16.

Thailand Looked to get right back into the match and send proceedings into a fifth set and were looking likely when leading the fourth set 12-9.

Korea though had other ideas and came back to lead 18-16, before taking the fourth set 25-20 and the match 3-1.

Kim was impressive with a game-high 29 points and was well supported by Kim Hee-Jin with 16 points. For Thailand, Kongyot scored 17 points while Sittirak added 16.

Korea's next match is against Germany and Thailand play Serbia.
