Team profile

The 2013 World Grand Prix marked Algeria’s debut in the tournament, when they were selected by the African Volley Confederation to represent the continent along with Kenya. Although they failed to win a set in the course of their three defeats, the experience should serve them well this year. They had previously lost out to Kazakhstan and Chinese Taipei respectively in their qualification campaigns for the tournament in 2011 and 2012.

The Algerians have shown that their ability to handle pressure is one of their main attributes. In 2008 they eliminated Kenya in the deciding match for a berth at the Beijing Olympic Games, and four years later the two teams squared off with a place at London 2012 on the line. Again the Algerians prevailed, and they finished equal 11th place in both Olympic tournaments.

They made their first appearance at the World Championship in 2010 and did the same at the World Cup the following year, where they again recorded a victory over the Kenyans. Lydia Oulmou will be a key player for the 2014 World Grand Prix campaign. She competed at Beijing 2008, captained the side in London four years later, and plays professionally in France.

Coach profile

Francois Salvagni was announced as the Algeria women's coach in December 2013, and officially took charge a month later. Before taking the Algeria job, he had spent his coaching career at clubs in his native Italy.

As coach of Chateau d'Ax Urbino, he was named coach of the year for Serie A and led them to victory in the 2010/11 CEV Cup. For the 2012/13 season he took the head coach role at the Duck Farm Turin Chieri club, and he will combine his role there with leading the Algeria team. Salvagni has spoken about his aim to nurture young Algerian players for the future, and the 2014 World Grand Prix is his first chance to see his starlets in action at a major international tournament.
