Team profile

This is the fourth consecutive time that Argentina have qualified for the World Grand Prix and coach Orduna Guillermo is looking for his team to climb up the standings this time. Last year they came 16th, one place below where they ended in 2012 and two berths off their 2011 finish.

The Argentines have never competed at the Olympic Games and their most recent appearance at the World Championship was in 2002 when they placed equal 17th. They came 10th at the World Cup in 2011. The team have enjoyed considerable success at the South American Championship, accumulating six silver medals and 12 bronzes over the years. They took bronze medals at the 2008 Pan American Cup and the same year’s Final Four Cup. Argentina have also qualified for this year’s World Championship where they join Brazil as South America’s representatives in the competition.

Guillermo’s squad includes veterans of previous campaigns in Lucia Fresco, who played her 2013/14 season in Germany, and Josefina Fernandez. Most of the players on the national team played professionally outside the country last season and that experience should benefit their campaign at the World Grand Prix.

Coach profile

After being installed as coach the previous December, Guillermo Orduna led Argentina’s third World Grand Prix campaign last year when they went out at the second pool stage in Hong Kong, finishing 16th overall.

He enjoyed greater success in steering his team to the bronze medal in the 2013 Pan American Cup and silver at the 2013 South American Championship. He also oversaw their qualification for this year’s World Championship in Italy, where they will make their first appearance in the competition for 12 years. Orduna, formerly an assistant coach with the Argentina men’s team, also led his country’s Under-22 women to gold at the 2014 South American Games.
