Team profile

The Dominican Republic have qualified for the World Grand Prix every season since 2004, and enter this tournament eighth in the world rankings. Their best performances in the tournament to date were the eighth-place finishes they achieved in 2006 and 2010. Last year they came 10th. Their greatest success on the global stage so far was taking the bronze medal at the 2009 Grand Champions Cup in Japan. The team, known as the Queens of the Caribbean, participated at the Athens 2004 and London 2012 Olympic Games, tying for fifth place at the latter. They have also competed in the World Championship six times and at the World Cup three times. Last year they took the bronze medal at the Montreux Volley Masters tournament in Switzerland.

Closer to home, they took the gold medal at the Pan American Games in 2003 and did the same at the NORCECA Championship in 2009 and the Pan American Cup in 2008 and 2010. Setter Niverka Marte is a rising star who will be one to watch at the World Grand Prix. She was a member of the Dominican side that claimed silver at the World Under-20 Championship in 2009. She has been a member of the senior team since 2008 and plays at club level with Igtisadchi Baku in Azerbaijan.

Coach profile

Marcos Kwiek was appointed Dominican Republic coach in 2008 and his team have qualified for every World Grand Prix since. He led them to the gold medal at the 2010 Pan American Cup and silvers in 2009, 2011 and 2013. He also steered them to victory at the NORCECA Continental Championship in 2009. The same year they took bronze at the Grand Champions Cup, the team’s highest ever finish in an FIVB competition. In 2010 he masterminded their triumph at the Central American and Caribbean Games. Kwiek began his coaching career in his native Brazil in 1995. He served as an assistant coach of the Brazilian women’s team from 2003 to 2007.
