We can learn a lot from Japan: China coach Lang Ping

China coach Lang Ping

Sapporo, Japan, August 31, 2013 – China had to fight hard to maintain their unbeaten record in the FIVB World Grand Prix Finals on Saturday as Japan fought them all the way. China won 3-2 (25-16, 18-25, 26-24, 21-25, 15-13) at Hokkaido Prefectural Sports Center and now face a showdown with Brazil on Sunday for the title. China coach Lang Ping says her team can learn from Japan.

China coach Lang Ping: We prepared for a game like this. Japan is a great team, is very well organised, fast and have great ball control. They have many good things that we don’t have. I think we were looking forward to this game. I told my players Japan are a great team and it’s their home court and there will be a lot of noise. I said, ‘You must concentrate on the game.’ I want to learn from this game. We need to learn many things from Japan. It was a great performance from all the fans and I want to thank the fans for cheering all the athletes.

(Re. final game against Brazil): I don’t think we even have 24 hours to prepare. It’s a very, very short time. Before this game, I haven’t thought about the last match. We’ll play our best to try and learn from the game. Brazil have more experience and I think they deserve to be ranked No. 1 in the world.

China captain Hui Ruoqi: Today the match was on Japan’s home court so the noise was very big and we needed to concentrate to play; I know how the Japanese people love volleyball. Japan’s block and defence improved so we just tried to be patient and use our teamwork to win. It was a very valuable game for us.

China No. 2 Zhu Ting: Today, I felt a lot of pressure because of all the fans around the court but we had good teamwork and I tried to do my best.

Japan coach Masayoshi Manabe: Today, we played a full-sets match but lost. We had fewer mistakes and better defence than before, but we lost and we need to think about being stronger. China have tall and young players and their technique is great. Tomorrow, we play the USA, who have a high block, but we want to end the World Grand Prix with a win.

(Re. Yukiko Ebata’s 36 points): I didn’t say anything to her. Today, was the first time she was in good condition in the World Grand Prix. I don’t know what happened to her.

Japan captain Saori Kimura: Today, we felt better compared to the other games, but we still made mistakes and couldn’t win so I’m sorry about that.

Japan No. 14 Yukiko Ebata: I really wanted to win but we couldn’t, so it’s a real shame. As I didn’t play yesterday, I wanted to explode in today’s game.
