Dominican Republic shocks Italy with 3-2 defeat

The Dominican Republic’s Prisilla Rivera Brens scored 28 points for her team

Kaohsiung city, Chinese Taipei, August 17, 2013 – World No. 10 Dominican Republic defeated World No. 4 Italy in a thrilling tiebreak match 3-2 (21-25, 19-25, 32-30, 26-24, 25-11) on Saturday, bringing Italy down in the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix rankings and making their chances of entering the Finals a tight race on Sunday.

The Dominican Republic’s Prisilla Rivera Brens stayed in the entire match to score 28 points for her team, along with captain Bethania De La Cruz De Pe¤a, who scored 22.

Italy’s Valentina Diouf also scored a spectacular 29 points in the match, but it was not enough to save her team, which now has six wins and two losses.

The Dominican Republic has recorded their most victories in one single World Grand Prix edition, with five wins. They recorded four wins in 2008.

Saturday’s match, which was the first meeting between the countries in the World Grand Prix, was one of the highest scoring matches, with 228 total points.

In the first set, Italy’s Valentina Fiorin and Valentina Diouf produced high blocks and the powerful attacks to lead the Italians to a 25-21 set win.

In the second set, Italy maintained their imposing attacks and tight defenses to again take the lead. The Dominican Republic women could not stop the Italian defense, allowing the team to win another set, 25-19.

In the third set, the Dominican Republic’s captain Bethania de La Cruz and Prisilla Rivera, took this match at the first deadlock with their continuous attacks. The team became more ambitious to seal the third win and continue the match, fighting until securing the set score for the Dominicans at 32-30.

In the fourth set, Italy initially let the game with a 8-4 score, but after the first technical time out, the women of the Dominican Republic turned the set again at 9-10. Italy tied the match at 24-24, but an attack by the Dominican Republic’s Annerys Victoria Vargas Valdez helped her team seat the set at 26-24.

Going into the tiebreak set, the Dominican Republic produced fast, imposing attacks and perfect defence, ending the set with a 15-11 score and a 3-2 match win.

Italy plays World No. 7 Turkey on Sunday. The Dominican Republic will face Algeria, who have yet to win their first set in this year’s World Grand Prix and are last in the World Grand Prix rankings.
