Brazil post much-needed win against the Netherlands

Brazil worked hard on defence and serving to stage a 3-0 win against the Netherlands

Almaty, Kazakhstan, August 17, 2013 – Brazil staged a straight-set victory against the Netherlands, 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-15) in Pool K at the Baluan Sholak Sport and Culture Palace on Saturday. Brazil, who placed second in the 2012 FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix, now inch closer to making this year’s Finals with 20 points and one loss.

Brazil’s Fernanda Rodrigues lead her team with 17 points, including three service aces.

“We knew we had to win this game. It’s very important. We had a lot of difficulties in the beginning of the game. We were able to do what needed to do in the game and things started to happen and we won,” Rodrigues said.

World No. 20 The Netherlands, who are in 12th place and won’t make it to the Finals, played excellent defence, with Anne Bruijs at the wing, leading her team with 10 points.

In the first set, Gabriela Braga Guimaraes retaliated for the Brazilians with a share of attacks, but the Dutch hitters were able to outsmart the opponents with soft taps, to take the 8-5 lead at the first technical time out (TTO). Rodrigues managed Brazil’s frontline by scoring off blocks, and sending several attacks. The Brazilians went on a scoring rally and later took the 16-9 advantage at the second TTO. The Dutch tried to bounce back with Manon Flier’s sharp attacks. However, Guimaraes and Rodrigues proved unstoppable in their scoring rampage, to take Brazil to a successful first set at 25-15.

In the second set, Bruijs and Flier heated up as the Dutch tried to match the pace and power of the Brazilians. The Netherlands’ defence tightened at the net, closing out on the Brazilians’ attacks.  Ball-handling and attacking errors marked the Netherlands’ plays after the first TTO, while Brazil captain Fabiana Claudino worked the frontline effectively. Guimaraes scored from the wing to bring Brazil to a 16-15 lead at the second TTO. Coach Gido Vermeulen utilised his bench players, including Lonneke Sluetjes who scored several points for the Netherlands. But the Dutch lagged in floor defence to give the 25-20 win to Brazil.

The Dutch seemed disorganised with their defensive formation by the third set. Meanwhile, Rodrigues displayed versatility with her attacks, hitting from the wing and soaring from the back row. Defence was likewise top priority on the Brazil side, as they denied and deflected any isolated chance the Dutch could set up their plays. The Brazilians pulled away from their counterparts and emerged from the final set with 25-15.

Brazil competes against World No. 30 Kazakhstan on Sunday, in the final match of the last day of preliminary rounds.
