China remain undefeated after tiebreak win against Turkey

Passionate Chinese players thrilled over victory

Hong Kong, China, August 11, 2013 – China remain undefeated in the 2013 FIVB World Grand Prix as the world No. 5 ended Turkey’s winning streak in a tiebreak match on Sunday at Hong Kong Coliseum 3-2, (19-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-15, 15-10).

China’s Ting Zhu continued to be her team’s top scorer with 23 points. Last week Ting scored 32 points against the Netherlands (3-1 win). Turkey’s captain Darnel Neslihan led her team with a total of 24 points.

The two undefeated teams in Pool I got off to an even start in the first set. Encouraged by the overwhelming crowd of 9,000, China started off with great determination, but Turkey, ranked seventh in the world, did not let them get away. Taking advantage of an error made by China, Turkey managed to lead by a slight margin at the first technical timeout (8-7). The remarkable performance of the Turkish player Ergul Avci in attack and blocking gradually stretched the lead to 16-10 at the second technical timeout. China continued to struggle, allowing Turkey to widen their comfortable lead, forcing China to call for a timeout at 14-22. Even though China brought in the promising player Ting hoping to strengthen their defense at 15-22, they could not turn the game to their favour, losing the first set at 19-25.

Both teams played efficient attacks from the beginning of the second set. China geared up with the help of rising star Ting in various kills and jumped to an 8-4 lead entering the first technical timeout. Taking advantage of their momentum China continued playing impressively through solid spikes and tough blocks, forcing Turkey to call for two timeouts before entering the second technical timeout. Turkey emerged more determined and managed to gain four consecutive points. China quickly asked for a timeout. The timeout brought about some relief for the China team and they regained their composure. Yang Junjing came out with some smart plays in making use of skillful tips and quick kills. China kept on their pacing to claim the second set 25-17.

In the third set, China started strong through quick solid spikes to the back of the court and blocks on the Turkey side. Witty block and attack sequences demonstrated by Hui Ruoqi got China to a seven-point lead by the first technical timeout. Turkey’s team stepped up the game with Darnel’s three consecutive ace serves and a forceful spike, snatching four points in a row. But Zhu’s power spikes were still able to secure China’s lead. As Turkey struggled to get the right breaks as their spikes barely penetrated the Chinese blocks, one devastating spike by Zhu put the seesaw set to an end at 25-20.

Early in the fourth set, Turkey wasted their chance to pull away with repeated errors in attack, letting China overtake the lead at the first technical timeout (8-5). Benefitting from the technical timeout, Turkey gradually came back with good attacks and digs, earning a two-point advantage at the second technical timeout (16-14). China began to lose their concentration and could do little to catch up. Turkey eventually took the set 25-15, taking the match to a tiebreak.

The tiebreak started close, with both teams displaying their attack power. China pulled ahead through impressive digs and forceful kills. The set then became easier for the Chinese women, as they showed good team spirit and maintained powerful attacks, especially by attacker Zhu, forcing Turkey to use up the two timeouts. Turkey’s captain Darnel tried to battle back with some attacks and one ace serve, but made a fatal error with her last serve, resulting in China’s win 15-10.
