Germany claim Grand Prix first with 3-0 win against Poland

Germany more than happy with first World Grand Prix win against Poland

Plock, Poland, August 10, 2013 - Germany won their first ever World Grand Prix match against Poland, claiming a 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 26-24) win in the second round of pool matches.

It was the first time Germany had beaten Poland at a major tournament since a 3-2 win in the group stage of the 1999 European Championships.

Poland coach Piotr Makowski changed one player in his starting line-up from the 3-0 win against Kazakhstan with Monika Martalek replacing Agnieszka Kakolewska at the middle of the net.

That first set was close, point for point, with Poland's Katarzyna Skowronska-Dolata and Germany's Christiane Furst both prominent for their teams. Furst and captain Margareta Kozuch helped Germany into a 16-13.

Poland had trouble breaking through Germany's block and despite coach Makowski switching his setters at 18-13 down, Poland were powerless to stop Germany taking the opening set 25-17.

An outstanding start to the second set put Germany into an early 5-0 lead, which they turned into a 13-5 lead before Makowski again tried to get his team moving with player changes.

Poland improved their defence and threatened to get back into the set at 16-9 but it was not enough as Germany played better with each ball.

Furst and Corina Ssuschke-Voigt were flashy in contrast to Poland's weak blocking and Germany claimed the second set 25-17 on a failed serve from Agnieszka Kakolewska.

Heike Beier started the third set with a pair of aces and Germany built and early 8-5 lead which they maintained until the middle of the set.

A phenomenal double Polish block on Kozuch forced Germany coach Guidetti to ask for a time-out despite his team's 15-12 lead and Poland's blocking got them back into the set and the match at 22-22.

Skowronska-Dolata spiked Poland ahead at 24-23 and Guidetti took another time-out to talk his team through the final points. Finally, two weak spikes from Poland captain Skowronska-Dolata gave Germany a match point and they took it to win the set 26-24 and the match 3-0.

Maren Brinker and captain Kozuch were Germany's top scorers, each with 14 points, but were well supported by Furst and Beier, who both scored 12.
