Italy too good for Cuba to keep Grand Prix momentum

Italy toast their straight sets win

Ekaterinburg, Russia, August 10, 2013 – Italy beat Cuba 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-20) in their FIVB Grand Prix fixture on Saturday, keeping them in contention near the top of the Grand Prix standings.

It was a straightforward win for the Italians, who proved too strong for Cuba throughout. Italy went 8-5 ahead in set one thanks to the attacks of Indre Sorokaite and Martina Guiggi. Melissa Teresa Vargas Abreu was Cuba’s shining light, but her teammates made too many mistakes, and from 16-13 up, Italy powered forward to win the set 25-16.

In the second set, the Cuban side continued to make too many errors, and Italy led 10-16, again holding their advantage, with Valentina Arrighetti adding heavily to the scoring. They shut out the set, winning 25-16 again.

In the third set Cuba, started to play more attentively and went ahead 5-3, but Italy again asserted themselves, getting 16-14 ahead, and remaining in control to win 25-20. Once again, Cuba’s mistakes counted against them.

Valentina Arrighetti and Indre Sorokaite got ten points each for Italy, while the match’s top scorer was Cuba’s Melissa Teresa Vargas Abreu, with 14.

1,100 fans saw the match at the Divs Uralochka.

Italy are fourth in the Grand Prix standings, Cuba - who have now lost their last ten matches in a row – are 19th.

Cuba face Russia tomorrow while the Italians tackle Thailand.
