Brazil overcome Dominican Republic 3-1 in World Grand Prix

Brazil captain Fabiana Claudino spikes in Friday's win over the Dominican Republic

Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, August 9, 2013 – Brazil started the second week of the FIVB World Grand Prix with a 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 25-12, 25-18) victory over the Dominican Republic in Pool G on Friday.

Brazil now has a 4-0 record, while the Dominican Republic dropped to 2-2.

Gabriela Guimaraes of Brazil and Bethania De La Cruz of the Dominican Republic both scored 25 points. Brazilians Fernanda Rodrigues (20 points) and Fabiana Claudino (13) were the only other players to reach double figures in the match.

The other stats were largely even: Both teams made 19 errors, both picked up six service points and Brazil edged the blocking total 9-8. The Dominicans made more spiking attempts than Brazil (160-153), but the Brazilians made theirs count (61-44).
The Dominican Republic started the first set aggressively and after some dominating serves Priscilla Rivera put the Dominicans 12-8 up, Brazil coach Jose Roberto Guimarães called an urgent timeout, but the Caribbean team extended their advantage to six points at the second technical timeout after an attack by youngster Jeoselyna Rodriguez. Brazil closed the gap to two points at 19-17 but the Dominican Republic stretched their lead again and a failed serve by Brazil’s Michelle Pavão ended the set.

Brazil’s began the second set with a different game strategy, concentrating on their defensive line, but the Dominicans were still in the match. A block by Gabriela Guimarães tied the scores at 12 and the Brazilian added more points as her team took a one-point lead at the second technical timeout. Marianne Fersola of the Dominican Republic spiked to tie things up at 17-17 following a great battle at the net, but Brazil made the plays when it counted and tied things up at 1-1 on a wayward shot by Annerys Vargas.

Inconsistency caused a Dominican collapse in the third set and Brazil led by 11 at the second technical timeout. An error by Yonkaira Peña ended the set at 25-12 and gave Brazil a 2-1 advantage.

Brazil continued their fast game through the fourth set and finished it at 25-18 to seal the victory.
