Japan beat hosts Turkey to maintain perfect start

Japan team after win against Turkey

Ankara, Turkey, August 4, 2013 – Japan beat hosts Turkey 3-1 (25-21, 30-28, 18-25, 25-18) to finish the first weekend of the 2013 World Grand Prix undefeated.

Japan’s Saori Kimura and Yukiko Ebata were the match's top scorers with 17 points, while Gozde Sonsirma and Neslihan Darnel both scored 16 points for Turkey.

The first set started and continued with both sides trading runs but Turkey led 8-7 and 16-14 ahead at the time-outs. As Japan evened the score at 17-17 and then went ahead at 21-18, Turkey’s head coach Massimo Barbolini called a time-out, but it didn’t help and Japan won the set 25-21.

Turkey started the second set with a 4-0 lead but Japan levelled at 6-6 and then surged ahead at 10-6. With good serving from Sonsirma Gozde and the spikes of Darnel Neslihan, Turkey tied the score at 13-13 and then both teams played well and traded runs until 28-28. Japan just edged the set 30-28.

Turkey opened the third set with an 8-5 lead and then extended it to 16-11. Turkey's blocking plays were successful, and Ozsoy Neriman, Darnel Neslihan and Cansu Busra were all prominent point scorers as Turkey won the third set 25-18.

Japan had an 8-6 lead at the beginning of the fourth set and extended it to 18-13 with good attacks and tight defence. Turkey tried to narrow the difference, but the hosts couldn't pull back the deficit and Japan won the final set 25-18 to win the match 3-1.

Victory maintained Japan's 100% start to the 2013 World Grand Prix after 3-0 wins against Thailand and Algeria.
