Puerto Rican coach: The Dominicans train more than us

Bethania De la Cruz scored a match-high 16 points to lead Dominican Republic in the victory over Puerto Rico

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, August 3, 2013 – Puerto Rico coach Rafael Olazagasti partially blamed himself for Saturday’s 3-0 loss to the Dominican Republic and praised the dedication, concentration and availability of the Dominican players to train with their national team.

Rafael Olazagasti, coach of Puerto Rico: Dominican Republic played with stability and that gave them the victory. They did what they needed and we were not able to close the sets the way we wanted. I also made some mistakes. The Dominicans train more than us. They do it six of seven days and in Puerto Rico that’s not the case. The financial need of the Dominicans make them more dedicated and always available. Over there (Puerto Rico), you call the players for training camps but they decline because of professional commitments like the case of our best libero.

Marcos Kwiek, coach of Dominican Republic: I am happy because we recovered from a 0-3 loss and won three important points. Now I only have a few hours to study Czech Republic and get the points to be among the best by finishing second here. We focused on the correct strategy and while we didn’t play well at times, the girls were able to recover.

Bethania De la Cruz, captain of Dominican Republic: It was an emotional game for both teams like always even more for us because we felt the pressure of giving the victory to our fans. We needed to have the concentration in order to win and we did it, not like against Serbia when we were lost. The focus was the main thing. Puerto Rico kept attacking, battling all the time, with high spirit and their attitude made us stronger to elevate our level and win the match. It was a matter of discipline, a lot of concentration and dedication.

Yarimar Rosa, captain of Puerto Rico: It was a better match than on Friday. We didn’t show a Grand Prix level but we improved and I am convinced we will continue that trend. The Dominicans dominated us with their blocking. We made mistakes at key moments like when we were in the middle of positive streaks. We need to improve and we will try to do that.
