Powerful duo lead Serbia to second win


Serbia's Jovana Brakocevic contributed 19 points to the victory over Czech Republic in straight sets on Saturday

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, August 3, 2013 – Serbia recorded their second victory in as many days in defeating a tough Czech Republic in straight sets (28-26, 25-18, 25-23) at the Volleyball Palace of Santo Domingo on Saturday.

The duo of Brankica Mihajlovic and Jovana Brakocevic combined to register 41 points as Serbia dominated in spikes (43-38), blocks (13-6) and aces (10-5).

For second day in a row Mihajlovic topped the winners with 22 points, including three blocks and one ace, while Brakocevic added 19 with three aces. Milena Rasic had a match-high six blocks and two aces among her 11 tallies.

Aneta Havlickova and Michaela Mlejnkova each recorded 15 points for the defeated side while Ivana Pichotova chipped in with eight, including three aces.

In Sunday’s action, the Serbs take on Puerto Rico while the Czechs face on hosts Dominican Republic.

The Czechs had a fast start with Pichotova serving and Monzoni scoring with spike and block forcing a Serbian time-out at 4-0. They led 8-3 at the first pause. When play resumed Brakocevic landed her spike and Rasic served one ace for Serbia and it was the Czechs calling a time-out. With Brakocevic on serve, Serbia pulled a tie at 10-all. Teams remained equalized until Mlejnkova scored for a 16-15 Czech Republic slight advantage.  Havlickova and Mlejnkova parlayed spikes increasing the gap to 18-15. Mlejnkova scored off the block for set-point at 24-22 but Serbia came back on the shoulders of Milhajlovic to tie at 24-all. The Serbians closed the first set 28-26 with a spike down the middle by Rasic following a defensive error by the Czech side.

It was a see-saw battle early in the second stage. Serbia took the 4-0 lead only to see the Czechs coming back to tie at 4-all. Havlickova’s attack out of bounds gave the Serbian the one-point lead at the first pause. With Milhajlovic serving, Serbia won five consecutive points for a 13-7 advantage. The second technical time-out arrived with the Serbians in front 16-10. Kossanyiova capped a three-point rally by the Czechs forcing a time-out at 16-13. Havlickova planted a bomb but Brakocevic answered back with a huge spike and Krsmanovic served a winner. Brakocevic hit a cross-court from the right side for 20-14 and the Serbians went on to take the set 25-18.

Brakocevic’s spike and ace sandwiched around a block by Ognjenovic against Kossanyiova gave Serbia an 8-7 lead. The Czechs tied at 14-all with one ace by Milhajlovic but the Rasic scored her sixth block of the match this time against Kossanyiova and served one ace for the 16-14 score. It was show-time for Brakocevic who scored with a spike and followed with two aces after another spike of Krsmanovic. Pichotova served three consecutive aces to lead a Czech’s reaction to tie the score at 23-all but Brakocevic and Milhajlovic came alive for Serbia to close at 25-23.
