Italy maintain unbeaten record against Kazakhstan

Italy have not lost to Kazakhstan on the three occasions the teams have played

Montichiari, Italy, August 3, 2013 – Italy defeated Kazakhstan in three straight sets on Saturday 3-0 (28-26, 25-17, 25-13) to record their second win from as many matches in the 2013 FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix.

Following Friday's straight sets win over Argentina, world No. 4 Italy were too strong for Kazakhstan who had lost to Germany in four sets on Friday.

Valentina Diouf was the top scorer for Italy with 16 points while Tatyana Mudritskaya led Kazakhstan, ranked 30th in the world, with 13 points.

Saturday’s meeting was the second match ever between the two countries in the FIVB World Grand Prix and third overall. Previously, Italy beat Kazakhstan in five sets in the 2011 Preliminary Round. In 2008, the teams also met at the Beijing Olympic Games, when Italy beat Kazakhstan in straight sets in the first round group stage.

Repeating its historic power against Kazakhstan, Italy lead from the first set, after coming back from Kazakhstan’s beginning lead of 13-16 at the second technical time-out. Italy’s Cristina Barcellini helped the team lead 20-18, and then Carolina Del Pilar Costagrande got the first set point at 24-22. Despite Kazakhstan’s reaction, a decisive point by Caterina Bosetti allowed Italy the set win at 28-26.

In the second set, Italy’s concentration grew. A block by Diouf against Mudritskaya gave Italy the first set point, winning 25-17.

Italy repeated its success in the third set, closing the game 25-13, with Italy’s Valentina Arrighetti making the final point from the middle.
