Brazil defeats Russia to claim second victory of 2013 Grand Prix

Brazil celebrates their second longest FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix winning streak against Russia.

Campinas, Brazil, August 3, 2013 – Brazil achieved their second longest FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix winning streak against Russia following an impressive 3-2 (26-28, 26-24, 25-29, 22-25, 15-8) victory at the Arena Amil Gymnasium on Saturday, which represented their third successive win over the world champions. The win also puts Brazil, who beat Russia four times in a row from 1995 to 1996, second in Pool A after dropping their first points of the competition after beating Poland on the opening day.

In a repeat of the 2012 Olympic Games quarterfinal where Russia failed to convert six match balls before losing to Brazil in five sets, both teams were hard to separate.

Russian opposite Nataliya Goncharova recorded the best score of the 2013 World Grand Prix so far with 25 points, while wing spiker Fernanda Garay topped the scoring for Brazil with 22.

The win also represented world No. 2 Brazil’s third successive win (the previous two being the 2011 World Grand Prix semifinal and the 2012 Olympic Games quarterfinal) against Russia in all FIVB competitions since going down to the world No. 6 in the 2010 World Championship final.

The teams, which have faced each other 24 times before in the World Grand Prix, got off to an even start in the first set. Russia used its strong attacks to take a close lead 8-7. Brazil had difficulties facing the opponent’s block, but recovered some points thanks to Russia’s errors (15-14). However, the Russia increased its attack to win the set 28-26.

In the second set, Russia maintained its pace to open the set with an 8-5 lead. Improved blocks allowed Brazil to come back 14-13, and the set continued with both teams fighting for the lead. After strong block by Adenizia Silva’s block, however, Brazil won the set 26-24.

Both teams started the third set with a strong performance. After an impressive sequence serves by Adenizia Silva, Brazil got off to a six-point lead 15-9. The home side maintained its advantage to win the set 25-19.

Russia committed many errors in the beginning of fourth set, but kept the lead on the score 16-15 thanks to their powerful attack. Led by a great performance by spiker Tatiana Kosheleva and opposite hitter Nataliya Goncharova, the away side came back to win the set 25-22 and push the match into a tiebreak.

Brazil came back strong in the tiebreak fifth set, taking a three-point lead and powering through the end of the set, winning 15-8.
