Aggressive approach in game was key to Bulgaria's first win in WGP

Bulgaria coach Marcello Abbondanza and Netherlands coach Gido Vermeulen at the post-match press conference

Macau, China, August 3, 2013 – Bulgaria defeated the Netherlands 3-1 (20-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-23), Bulgaria coach Marcello Abbondanza attributed their win to their aggressive approach in their game and their good attention to their tactics.

Bulgaria coach Marcello Abbondanza: I am very happy with the first victory at the Grand Prix. We adopted a very aggressive approach in our game and this is needed because both teams are very strong and with many young players. The Netherlands team had a better start, but we were able to focus our attention on our tactics.

Bulgaria captain Strashimira Filipova: Today we showed very good level of volleyball, most importantly, the team fought together through the difficult moments. We played better today and showed our capability as a team on court.

Netherlands coach Gido Vermeulen: I want to congratulate the Bulgaria team on the good game, in which they played very aggressively. Today, we started well, we had good serve and good strategy. In the second set we lost momentum and in the technical timeout, there were incidents with two players. From then on, the Bulgarian team took over the game. We fought as hard as we could and this showed in the fourth set but they were better in the end. Tonight, we will get some rest, recover and watch the game to get some inspiration to prepare for the match against China on Sunday.

Netherlands captain Maret Grothues: It was a tough match. At times, we did not reach our level and we made too many mistakes. In some areas, we played good volleyball butBulgaria played better.
