Brazil coach Zé Roberto: We knew it was going to be a tough match

Zé Roberto during the vicory over Poland

Campinas, Brazil, August 2, 2013 – Following a 3-1 victory over Poland, Brazilian coach José Roberto Guimarães said he had been expecting a tough match against the Europeans.

“In the first set we were a little nervous, so we committed too many errors. We knew it was going to be a tough match. They have an amazing serve potential,” he said.

Zé Roberto analyzed USA’s win over Russia, Brazil’s next opponent: “When the Russian head coach used Chaplina, it balanced the match against USA. Goncharova is a strong weapon playing as an opposite hitter. We’ll need to serve very well to not let them play with the ball in their hands.”

Brazilian captain Fabiana Claudino said that both serve and defense were essential to claim the victory: “We were a little nervous on some plays, so they could easily pass the ball. In the second set, we improved our serve and our defense. Then we felt better to play.”

Polish coach Piotr Makowski commented: “We had a good performance in the first and fourth sets. Brazil is a really tough team to face.”

The beginning of a new Olympic cycle was highlighted by Polish captain Katarzyna Skowronska: “It was our first match in a long time. We have a new team that needs to improve its game. We need to improve our defense system, especially. This is difficult, because we have just started to play together.”
