Czech Republic enjoys winning debut

Andrea Kossanyiova was one of the top contributors in the victory of Czech Republic over Puerto Rico

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, August 2, 2013 - Czech Republic made an auspicious debut at  the FIVB World Grand Prix defeating Puerto Rico in straight sets (25-14, 25-20, 25-18) at the Volleyball Palace in Santo Domingo on Friday.

In their first ever match in the women’s annual competition, the Czechs played consistent volleyball and established a strong defense at the net, finishing with a 15-9 advantage in the blocking category.

Aneta Havlickova was the main scorer of the winners with a match-high 14 points followed by Michaela Mlejnkova with 12, including five blocks. Andrea Kossanyiova and Ivana Pichotova each contributed 9 points while Michaela Monzoni chipped in with 8 points.

Sheila and Karina Ocasio were the top offensive forces of Puerto Rico with 13 and 9 points respectively, with the former totaling five blocks.

Havlickova sent the Czechs to an 8-7 lead in the first set scoring four strong spikes from the right side. The Europeans expanded the gap to 12-8 with three consecutive blocks by Monzoni. Puerto Rico reduced the difference to 13-11 with a spike and a block by Sheila Ocasio but the Czechs came back behind the offense of Kubinova and Mljenkova. Kossanyiova landed two straight aces after her own spike to put the set out of reach. Czech Republic closed the first set 25-14 with a block by Mlejnkova.

The Czechs jumped to a 4-0 lead in the second set forcing a Puerto Rican time-out. The margin in favor of the team of Carlo Parisi stayed the same at 8-4, taking advantage of their superiority at the net. After Mlejnkova helped her team to a 15-9 lead Puerto Rico closed the distance to 15-12 following the spike of Karina Ocasio and two straight aces by Kanisha Jimenez.  Karina scored again from the left side and the Czechs were in front 16-13 at the second technical pause.  The gap increased to 21-16 after a couple of Puerto Rican mistakes and later on Havlickova scored her tenth point of the match for a 25-20.

The Europeans held an 8-6 lead in the third set. Puerto Rico tied the score at nine-all behind the spikes of Karina Ocasio and Kanisha Jimenez. Havkickova and Mlejnkova provided a two-point margin at 13-11 with two big attacks and Kossanyiova blocked Jimenez for a 16-13 difference at the second technical time-out. At 20-15 Puerto Rican called for time-out but things didn’t get better as Czech Republic closed the match, winning the third set 25-18 with a disguise play by Kubinova.
