USA's Kiraly pleased with progress in win over Russia

USA coach Karch Kiraly had a lot to be happy about following his side's win over Russia

Campinas, Brazil, August 2, 2013 – United States head coach Karch Kiraly praised his team after their 3-1 victory over Russia in the opening round of the 2013 FIVB World Grand Prix at the Arena Amil on Friday.

“Our players did a good job”, Kiraly said. “We have a young team that is learning a lot this season. I am also learning a lot. It is my first season as head coach and Russia has a very good team.

“Tomorrow I expect a really tough game against Poland, but we have to keep improving.”

USA’s captain Kristin Hildebrand highlighted Russia’s strength in her first match at the Arena Amil, home of Volei Amil, her team for next season.

“I am very proud of my team,” she said. “Russia is a really strong team and did a good job. I hope we keep playing this way here. I also liked the atmosphere. It was a good way to start.”

The high-speed of the US’ game impressed Russia’s head coach Iury Marichev.

“United States has a very fast game. Many players of our team had never seen a game as fast as the American, especially our middle-blockers”, Marichev said.

Russian captain Ekaterina Pankova meanwhile was left to rue the fact that her side were not able to find their style in the match.

“We tried to find our game, but we couldn’t do it. We also had a long flight from Russia to Brazil, and it affected our performance today.”
