United States defeat Russia in four sets


USA had plenty to celebrate after their 3-1 win over Russia

Campinas, Brazil, August 2, 2013 – The United States made a strong start to the 2013 FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix with a 3-1 (25-20, 17-21, 25-21 and 25-12) win against Russia at the Arena Amil Gymnasium on Friday.

Opposite spiker Kelly Murphy topped the score for USA with 16 points, while Russia’s Nataliya Goncharova led scoring in the match with 19 points.

The United States started strongly and took an 8-6 lead. With good defence and an efficient counter attack, the Americans went to the second time out leading by four at 16-12. With solid service and defence, USA took the first set 25-20.

In the second set, Russia tried to redeem themselves with an early 8-5 lead.  With opposite spiker Goncharova shining with good spiking, the Europeans led 17-12 and they took the opportunity to draw level and won the set 25-17.

After an even start to the third set, good defence and serving from the United States allowed them to open a three point lead at 16-13 and they held their advantage to win the set 25-21.

USA kept the momentum in the fourth set and quickly opened a four point lead at 8-4 and they didn’t let up until and won the set 25-12 and the match 3-1.
