Ankara, Turkey, August 2, 2013 – Japan made quick work of Thailand in their Pool C match of the 2013 FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix on Friday, winning in straight sets.

Japan’s captain Saori Kimura commented: “We have new players in our team. I wasn’t expecting this would be an easy game. But it was an easy game. We wanted to win and we won. I’m very happy to win the first match 3-0.”

“This was a good win,” said Japan’s coach Masayoshi Manabe. “We played good. Thailand is a strong team, but we were better today.”

Friday’s match was the sixth time the two countries have met in the World Grand Prix. Of the previous five, Japan won three, Thailand two. In the last four World Grand Prix matches between Japan and Thailand, results have alternated. Japan’s victory was according to this rhythm, which they were on pattern to win.

“This was our first game in the Grand Prix,” said Thailand captain Wilavan Apinyapong. “We tried to do our best but it wasn’t enough. We’ll try to be better in the next game.”

“I want to congratulate Japan first,” said Thailand coach Kiattipong Radchatagriengkai. “They played good. They have a very good structure of volleyball. My players tried very hard. We’re not satisfied today. We’ll try to do more in the next game.”
