Turkey sweep newcomers Algeria

Turkey, playing at home for the first time in the World Grand Prix having finished seventh in 2008 and third last year, celebrate their impressive win over debutants Algeria

Ankara, Turkey, August 2, 2013 – Hosts Turkey, under new coach Massimo Barbolini, beat debutants Algeria in straight sets in the second match of the first week of 2013 World Grand Prix. Turkey won the match 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-15) in a short match of one hour and five minutes.

Turkey’s Neslihan Darnel was the Pool C game’s top scorer with eight points while Boukhima Safia and Tassadit Aissou both earned seven points for Algeria in which was the first ever international encounter between the two teams.

Turkey, playing at home for the first time in the World Grand Prix having finished seventh in 2008 and third last year, started the match by gaining an immediate advantage of 4-0, leading Algeria’s coach Aimad Eddine Saidani to take his first time-out. The world No. 7 maintained their good start and found themselves leading 8-2 at the first Technical Time-Out. Turkey went 12-3 ahead with the spikes of Sonsirma Gözde, Darnel and Toksoy Bahar. Turkey stretched their lead to 16-6 in the second TTO before going on to secure the first set 25-13.

Turkey continued their dominance in the second set, opening a 5-0 advantage early on. At the first TTO, they were 8-2 ahead.  Algeria, ranked 14th in the world, lowered the difference in the score to three at 12-9 thanks to successive aces from Tassadit Aissou and making less mistakes. With Darnel’s and Tokatlioglu Seda’s spikes, Turkey maintained the lead at 16-11. With good blockings and spikes, Turkey won the second set 25-18 and were up 2-0.

The two sides traded runs in the third set to tie at 4-4 before Turkey went ahead at 7-4 with a 3-0 run and made it 8-5 at the first TTO. Turkey didn’t let Algeria get close after that and at 14-7, the home side were seven points ahead. By being effective in blocking and with the spikes of Ozsoy Neriman, Turkey was nine points ahead of Algeria at 21-12. With the last spike of Ergul Avci, Turkey won the third set 25-15 and the match 3-0.
