Netherlands' captain: 'From the first point we were very excited to play.'

Gido Vermeulen, head coach of the Netherlands, listening tentatively as Captain Maret Grotheus gives comments on their first win.

Macau, China, August 2, 2013 – The Netherlands cruised to a 3-0 victory (25-20, 25-14, 25-11) against Cuba with good discipline, good serve and good blocking strategy on Friday.

“We applied good pressure from our serve, so our block and defense were very stable and we were able to play our own games,” said The Netherlands’ captain Maret Grothues. “From the first point we were very excited to play.”

“We were very excited to play the first match here in the Grand Prix and could not wait to start the Games,” said The Netherlands coach Gido Vermeulen. “Our team played with very good discipline, good serve and good blocking strategy. Most important thing is that we maintain the discipline for all 3 sets.”

Cuba and the Netherlands have played each other eight times in the World Grand Prix with Cuba winning six and the Netherlands two. Their last World Grand Prix meeting was won by the Netherlands 3-1 in 2007.

“In spite of losing, the match today helps us to learn from our faults and prepare us for the coming matches,” said Cuba’s captain Daymara Lescay.

“I want to congratulate the Netherlands team for their match today, it was a great match,” said Cuba’s coach Juan Carlos Gala Rodriguez. “We have many new players in our team and we were not quick enough in our response against the attacks and strategy of the Netherlands.”
