Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, August 1, 2013 – Making a trip to this year’s World Grand Prix Finals in Sapporo, Japan is in the mind of Serbian Zoran Terzic so the veteran coach knows that it is a must to have a good start when the competition gets underway on Friday and his team play against hosts Dominican Republic.

“Our goal is to be among the six teams in the finals in Japan,” said Terzic. “This is a very strong pool and we anticipate a tough competition.”

The ninth-ranked Serbia gets their first taste of the competition when they meet the 10th world ranked Dominican Republic and Terzic admits it will be a difficult test.

“The Dominican Republic won the last match against us at the World Cup so it is a dangerous opponent,” he said. “To beat them we need to play well, I mean we have to serve, block and attack well and reduce the mistakes.”

Meanwhile, Marcos Kwiek, the Brazilian coach of Dominican Republic expressed optimism on the eve of the start of the competition saying that playing in front of the Dominican fans will be a factor of motivation for his side.

“We are very happy with the chance of playing in the country and the fans can help the motivation of our players,” Kwiek said. “We have trained very hard and the group is in good shape.”

“The first match against Serbia is a difficult one because they have the experience of playing in the European Leagues but you always learn when you face strong opponents,” he added. “We need to play at a high level.”

Czech Republic’s coach the Italian Carlo Parisi lamented the loss of team’s captain Helena Havelkova due to an injury but he anticipates a good show of volleyball.

“It is the first time we take part in the Grand Prix but we expect to have good results,” Parisi said. “Unfortunately, we lost our captain Havelkova and had to replace her with a young player.”

Regarding the first match against Puerto Rico “we don’t have much information about Puerto Rico, our first opponent but we expect to have a good game.”

Finally, Puerto Rican Rafael Olazagasti said his team is ready to go out and enjoy the opportunity of playing again in the World Grand Prix.

“We are ready to have a good competition in this opening stage of the World Grand Prix,” Olazagasti said. “We don’t have much information either about our first opponent, the Czech Republic but we need to emphasize on our defense and reduce the number of errors.”
