Serbia claim two friendly matches against Bulgaria

Ruma, Serbia, July 26, 2013 – The Serbia women’s national team beat Bulgaria twice in friendly matches held in preparation for the 2013 World Grand Prix on Wednesday and Thursday in Ruma.

Serbia, 2011 European champions, first beat the bronze medallists from this year’s European League in straight sets (25-17, 25-20, 25-21) and then cruised to another victory, in four sets (25-17, 25-12, 17-25, 25-16).

“I think we can be satisfied with what we did in these matches,” said Serbia’s setter Maja Ognjenovic. “We played well and most of all we wanted to test our blocking system and we did what our head coach was expecting from us. All players included in the group got the chance to play; we did claim both matches and I can say that this stage of our preparations was completed in the best possible way.”

Bulgaria’s head coach Marcello Abbondanza commented, “These matches were a good test for us to understand where we stand at this stage. Serbia is a very strong team while we were sidelined by the absence of Elitsa Vasileva and Mariya Karakasheva who could not play here in Ruma.”

Serbia and Bulgaria are both set to compete in the 2013 FIVB World Grand Prix that will start in early August. Serbia will first travel to Santo Domingo for the first round (August 2-4) to play hosts Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and the Czech Republic. One week later (August 9-11) Belgrade will host the second round of play with Serbia joined there by USA, the Netherlands and Algeria. In the third and last preliminary round Serbia will play in Wuhan against hosts China, Poland and Argentina. The top five teams at the end of the Intercontinental Round will join hosts Japan for the final round scheduled for August 28-September 1 in Sapporo.
