China claims second phase of China International Tournament

China's unbeaten performance bodes well for the FIVB World Grand Prix which starts in Aiugust

Shenzhen, China, May 24, 2013 – The China International Women’s Volleyball Tournament came to a successful end on Saturday in Shenzhen with hosts China ranking first ahead of Thailand, Puerto Rico and Cuba in that order.

The last match of the six-day tournament (split into two legs in Ningbo and Shenzen) was played between two teams in totally different situations. China, led by their new coach, Lang Ping, remain undefeated, while the young Cuba team, full of energy but lacking in experience, had played four five-set matches, losing all of them.

Backed by 18,000 spectators, China performed superbly across all facets - blocking, serving and spiking - and controlled the initiative throughout the game. Yet on the other side of the net, Cuba seemed not so engaged in the match and made errors regularly whether in defence or in attack. After 70 minutes, China claimed a comfortable victory in straight sets (25-13, 25-15, 25-12) to claim their second China International title in ideal preparation for the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix, which starts August.

In the penultimate match, Thailand also met the same challenge from Puerto Rico as China did on Thursday and like China succeeded in resisting the challenge in five sets 21-25, 25-13, 25-17, 21-25, 15-5. The result, in fact, already ensured China the title.

Following the tournament, China will return to Beijing to continue training until June 20. All four teams will play in the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix.
