New Chinese women’s national team starts training

"Jenny" Lang Ping spearheads formation of roster of the Chinese women's national team

Beijng, China, May 3, 2013 – The new Chinese women's national team gathered in Beijing on Thursday to start their preparations in the upcoming season, aimed towards the next Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The team currently trains under team manager and coach Hu Jin while returnee coach “Jenny” Lang Ping is completing other commitments with her Evergrande club team, currently competing at the Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship in Vietnam.

Forteen players have already arrived for the first training with the exception of libero Zhang Xian and blocker Xu Yunli, who are also competing at the Asian Club Championship. They are expected to join the training together with coach Lang Ping after the competition.

The players are very excited and have high hopes on training under Lang Ping.

“Coach Lang Ping was my idol when I was young, I hope I can improve myself under her coaching.” said Army club team player Yang Junjing.

“Lang Ping is an experienced coach, I hope I can improve my technical and tactical abilities under her coaching. I also hope I can learn as much as possible from my teammates, especially the experienced players.” said Qiao Ting, on her first ever selection to the national team.

Qiao Ting is joined by her teammates Zeng Chunlei and Liu Xiaotong from the Beijing club team, whose head coach is also a former national team head coach, Cai Bin.

A 23-player squad has been named by the China National Volleyball Administrative Center on April 28.

Eight players from the London 2012 Olympic Games roster have been included, without the four veteran players Wei Qiuyue, Ma Yunwen, Chu Jinling and Mi Yang. Eight young, new faces were added to the new roster.

Wang Qian, Wang Ning, Ding Xia, Yang Jie, Zhu Ting, Liu Yanhan, Huang Liuyuan complete the 23-player roster but will not be attending the training tentatively.

Lang Ping’s balanced transition strategy could easily be seen by putting on strong attackers in the roster, including Wang Yimei, Hui Ruoqi, Liu Xiaotong, Li Jing, Liu Yanhan, Zhu Ting, Yin Na and Yang Jie. This clearly mirrors Lang Ping’s high regard for this position and indicates the direction to intensify the team’s offense.

“The squad is named after a comprehensive consideration and discussion by the coaching staff. We will mainly focus on the young players this year. I hope the older players can set a good example for the young, and the young can progress to catch-up (with the veterans).” said Lang Ping on her micro-blog.

Lang Ping also commented on the name Lang’s Fleet, referring to the name being called by Chinese volleyball fans to the new team.

“The national team belongs to the Chinese people, it is not appropriate to call it just Lang’s Fleet,” said Lang Ping.

“Compared to the former national team, the new team retained some players and have put in some new changes especially in the setter position. We are now mainly getting to know the young players. After the National Games in September, the roster may have some changes,” said team manager and coach Hu Jin.

Another new member has been added to the coaching staff, Jang Jie, who will be one of the assistant coaches of the team. Jang Jie’s experience coaching overseas will bring more international vision and new ideas to the national team.
