Piotr Makowski appointed coach of Poland's national women's team

Lausanne, Switzerland, April 24, 2013 - Piotr Makowski has been appointed head coach of Poland’s national women’s team. Makowski, 45, was assistant coach of the women’s team from March 2009 to June 2011 that won third place at the CEV European Volleyball Championship in 2009. His first task will be preparing his team for the Preliminary Rounds of the 2013 FIVB World Grand Prix.

For the past two seasons, Makowski has coached Delecta Bydgoszcz . The team won the 2013 season of the Polish Volleyball League and finished fourth in the final classification.

In 2000, Makowski was appointed assistant coach for Centrostal, working alongside Leszek Piasecki. Then in the 2004-05 season, the man nicknamed ‘Makos’ became head coach and under his leadership Centrostal went on to win the Polish Cup. In the next season, his team took the Super Cup of Poland and fourth place in Moscow’s Final of Top Teams Cup. Although he was replaced by Jacek Grabowski in 2007, Makowski returned to the Centrostal role in April 2008, before getting involved in the international set-up.

Makowski will be charged with improving a side that are currently ranked 15th in the world and did not qualify for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Poland will take part in the Preliminary Rounds of the FIVB World Grand Prix and will looking to advance to the finals in Sapporo, Japan from August 28 to September 1.
