Cuba and Dominican Republic qualify to FIVB World Grand Prix


Annerys Vargas topscored Dominican Republic in their victory over Peru on Wednesday in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico

Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, July 18, 2012 – Cuba and Dominican Republic reached the semifinals of the XI Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup after scoring straight sets victories over South American sides of Argentina and Peru on Wednesday.

In the semifinal round, Cuba take on Brazil while Dominican Republic meet United States with all four teams qualified to next year’s FIVB World Grand Prix.


Cuba 3, Argentina 0
Cuba cruised to a straight-set (25-18, 25-13, 25-20) win over Argentina advancing to a semifinal clash with defending champions Brazil. Yanelis Santos was Cuba’s top scorer with 19 points, including 5 aces and 4 blocks. Gyselle Silva, Rosanna Giel and Wilma Salas followed with 13, 12 and 10 respectively. Lucia Fresco topped Argentina with 11 points. Cuba held advantages of 11-3 and 10-1 in blocks and aces respectively.

Dominican Republic 3, Peru 0
Dominican Republic reached the semifinals following a straight-set (25-16, 25-17, 25-20) victory over Peru. Annerys Vargas’ 16 points topped the Dominican side while Bethania De la Cruz, Lisvel Eve and Prisilla Rivera contributed 12, 10 and 9 points respectively. Carla Rueda finished with 13 points as the only Peruvian with double digits.

Canada 3, Costa Rica 2
Canada edged Costa Rica in a thrilling five-setter (25-22, 18-25, 25-16, 13-25, 15-13) of the consolation round. Sarah and Rebecca Pavan topped the winners with 18 and 11 points respectively.  Costa Rica’s Verania Willis and Karen Cope each finished with 16 while Mijal Hines and Angela Willis charted 10 apiece.

Puerto Rico 3, Trinidad & Tobago 1
Puerto Rico defeated Trinidad & Tobago in four sets (25-27, 25-11, 25-19, 25-17). Jetzabel Del Valle led four Puerto Ricans with double figures in scoring with 23 points. Yarimar Rosa, Amanda Vasquez and Stephanie Enright followed with 15, 14 and 13 respectively. Channon Thompson had 16 points for the defeated side and Krystle Esdelle added 13. The winners outserved their opponents 7-1.

Colombia 3, Mexico 2
The tandem of María Martinez and Diana Arrechea collected 29 and 28 points respectively to help the victory of Colombia over Mexico in five sets (25-23, 21-25, 25-16, 21-25, 15-13) for the eleventh position. Melissa Rangel chipped in with 12 points. Mexico’s Claudia Rios registered 16 points and Alejandra Isiordia added 13.
