Team profile

The year 2013 represents the third consecutive year that Argentina, ranked 19th in the world, have qualified for the World Grand Prix and their first under new coach Guillermo Orduna, who was formally an assistant to the national squad and led the Argentine Youth Girls team.

Orduna will have most of the players who played in 2012 at his disposal including key scoring weapons Lucia Fresco, Florencia Natasha Busquets and Josefina Fernandez although one of the first things Orduna has done is change the captaincy from Emilce Sosa, who remains in the squad, to wing spiker Paula Yamila Nizetich.

Under former coach Horacio Bastit, Argentina had an unbroken nine-year run of competing at the Pan-American Cup and qualified for the Final Four twice. This year in Peru they claimed only their second medal – a repeat of their bronze from 2008. In 2009 and 2011, Argentina were runners-up at the South American Championships behind Brazil – the second performance earning them a wild card entry for the FIVB World Cup where they finished 10th.

After a good showing at the 2010 Pan-American Cup where they finished fifth, the senior squad was awarded a spot in the 2011 World Grand Prix and they impressed on debut with victories over Cuba and the Dominican Republic to finish 14th.

Argentina’s 2011 Pan American Cup performance (sixth) also saw them qualify for the 2012 FIVB World Grand Prix where they finished 15th while they qualified again for the World Grand Prix with a fifth place finish at the 2012 edition.

Coach profile

Coach Orduna Guillermo is not new to the women’s team as he was part of the coaching staff from 1991 to 1996 with the Pan-American Games held in La Habana.

In 2006, he finished coaching the national youth team taking them to the World Championship in Macao in 2005.

He also coached national women’s Senior League during the 2005/06 season after which he became assistant coach of the national senior men’s team alongside Jon Uriarte.
