Poland clinch narrow win over Serbia

Poland celebrates it's victory over Serbia on Friday

Lodz, Poland, June 8, 2012 – Poland edged a 3-2 (24-26, 25-22, 20-20, 25-16, 15-10) victory over European champions Serbia to thrill their home fans in Lodz in their first match of the 2012 FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix on Friday.

The women's volleyball team went one better than the men's football team did on the opening day of Euro 2012 by sealing the win, collecting two points in the process.

Serbia's match was marred with mistakes, an astonishing 30 in five sets.

Katarzyna Skowro?ska-Dolata scored 23 points for Poland, while Jovana Brakocevi? was the best scorer for Serbia with 21.

Serbia started better, with self confidence and as a consequence remained in control for the first part of the match. Poland took the lead at 12-11 but Sanja Starovi?, who replaced Brakocevi?, helped keep her side in touch before they pulled even at 22-all. Tijana Malesevi?, who will play next season in the Polish league (PTPS Pila), then finished the set with powerful kill to take Serbia into a 1-0 lead.

Poland started the second set better, but the Serbians stayed within touch. Leading 11-7 Poland coach Alojzy ?widerek called a timeout before libero Paulina Maj put on a defensive masterclass. Brakocevi? served two aces towards the end of the set but it was Poland celebrating with a 25-22 win to tie the score.

In the third set Serbia continued to serve powerfully. This partnered with a constant, high level attack gave them a five point advantage. Poland picked up but Malesevi? closed the set once again at 25-20.

Poland took the lead from the beginning of the fourth set. At 6-12 Terzi? called for a time out but his team failed to close the gap to less than four points. Leading 18-12 ?widerek made a double substitution, with Joanna Kaczor and Joanna Wo?osz entering the court. Poland maintained the lead, and made an impressive finish, when ?ebrowska blocked Brakocevi? and Kasprzak served ace.

Poland carried this momentum into the tie-breaker and this proved to be the difference as they narrowly sealed the win to the delight of the home fans.
