Team profile
The Argentina women’s team has made a remarkable transformation in the past few years. They have had an unbroken nine-year run of competing at the Pan-American Cup, qualified for the Final Four twice and last year made their debut in the FIVB World Grand Prix, underlining the fine job coach Horacio Bastit has done.
The level of skill within the squad has improved immensely. In 2009 and 2011, Argentina were runners-up at the South American Championship behind Brazil, while the junior and youth teams have been equally successful at international level. After a good showing at the Pan-American Cup, the senior squad was awarded a spot in the FIVB World Grand Prix and its debut this year could not have been better, with players awarded for their dedication with victories over Cuba and the Dominican Republic.
Argentina’s Pan American Cup performance (sixth) also saw them qualify for this year’s FIVB World Grand Prix and, after finishing as the unlucky runners-up at the South American Championship (due to Argentina’s world ranking they were ranked fifth out of the five continental runners-up. The best four five runners-up automatically qualified for Japan), they were handed a wild card entry for the FIVB World Cup where they finished 10th.
Coach profile
Horacio Bastit took charge of Argentina in 2008. Bastit became part of Argentine women’s volleyball history as coach of Gimnasia y Esgrima de Buenos Aires (1985-1999), winning two Argentine League crowns and finishing third at the 1997 South American Club Championship. Bastit is supported by assistant coach Eduardo Guillaume, who coaches the Argentina junior women’s team, and Guillermo Cáceres, coach of the Argentina girls’ youth squad.
