Italy pick up win over Thailand

Fortune smiled on Italy as they saw off Thailand on Saturday
Almaty, Kazakhstan, August 13, 2011 – Italy put on a good performance as they defeated Thailand in a five set thriller (24-26, 19-25, 25-22, 25-15, 15-12) in Almaty, Kazakhstan as the 2011 FIVB World Grand Prix continued on Saturday.

Although the Italians were the bronze medalists in the last FIVB World Grand Prix, the Thai girls put up a solid challenge for the Europeans. But in this game fortune smiled on Italy and they saw off the Asian team aft5er a heart-stopping match.

The best scorer was Arrighetti with 18 points. Crisanti and Del Core added 13 points while Thinkaow from Thailand scored 17 points.

The first set’s battle between Italy and Thailand was began in an equal manner but Italy started to attack aggressively. The score was 5-2 for Italy before Thailand coach asked for a time out. Thanks to excellent play in attack from the Italian players they went on to take the lead but Thailand eventually fought back to take the opening set.

In the second set Thailand took the lead and Italy coach asked for a time out. Italy stayed within grasp and were eager to go ahead, however mistakes began t creep into their game towards the end of the set and Thailand underlined their lead at 2-0.

Thinkaow and Sittirak helped put Thailand into the lead again in the third but it was not to last as Italy bouced back, performing exquisitely after the second TTO. The Europeans were stoic in their approach as they pulled a set back.

That win I the third set gave Italy confidence and they carried their momentum into the fourth, taking the lead thanks to a superior block. Thailand reduced the deficit but it was not enough as the Italians powered through to take the match to a tie break.

The tie-break was successful for Italy as they took the lead. The Thai girls played perfect in block and cut the margin but Italy ground their way back into contention to finally seal the win.
