For the Serbians, Sanja Malagurski led the way with 22 points, while Milena Rasic chipped in with 15.

The Americans outblocked the Serbs 16-11 and outserved them 8-5.

The first set was close, but the Americans’ superior technique told in the end and they edged the Serbs by three points.

Serbia jumped out to a four-point lead in the second set, but the Americans changed tactics to shut the Serbians down and cruise to a six-point win.

Things turned around in the third and fourth sets, with Serbia taking advantage of their height to improve their blocking and crank up their offense.

But American coach Hugh McCutcheon turned his team around again and the Americans took the tiebreak set by five points to end a tough two-hour match.
