Team profile

The Dominican Republic have been regular participants in the World Grand Prix since 2004, with two eighth-place finishes their best results, including last year when they recorded their first ever victories over superpowers China and Italy.
Currently ranked No. 13 in the world, they booked their place in this year’s edition by winning the 2010 Pan American Cup in Mexico, where they defeated Peru in straight sets (25-17, 30-28, 25-22) in the gold-medal match.

It was a successful year for the Dominican side, who also won gold at the Central American and Caribbean Games for the third consecutive time with a dramatic five-set victory over hosts Puerto Rico. They also took the title at the Final Four Cup in Mexico with a five-set triumph against Peru.

The NORCECA reigning champions won the bronze medal at the 2009 World Grand Champions Tournament, their best ever result in an FIVB official event.
In their first international competition of 2011, they finished second in the China Women’s International Tournament with victories over Cuba and the Netherlands.

Coach profile

Brazilian Marcos Kwiek worked as an assistant coach for Brazil’s women’s team from 2003 to 2007 and has been head coach of the Dominican Republic team since 2008, when he took over from Beato Miguel Cruz. He guided the team to a silver medal in the 2009 Pan American Cup and gold at the NORCECA Women's Continental Championship in the same year. The Dominican women finished third at the FIVB World Grand Champions Cup in 2009 before taking gold at both the Pan American Cup and Central American and Caribbean Games last year.
