Our receiving let us down: Manabe

Japan coach Masayoshi Manabe: "Today, we won 3-1, but I feel some aspects of today's match weren't so good. For example, we allowed so many points when our service reception didn't work. I don't know how many points we lost today, but we'll try to do better tomorrow with what we learned from today's match."

(Re. losing a 10-point lead in the third set and facing tough serves) "They were scoring many points with their good jump serve so I told the players that if the ball comes to them strongly don't worry about trying to find (setter Yoshie) Takeshita, just try to get the ball to the center of the court."

Japan captain Erika Araki: "We won but we made many mistakes. What is important is to prepare for the match against Italy and play as a team."

Japan No. 4 Kaori Inoue: "The Dominicans made many mistakes and that helped us to win."

(Re. first set you made many blocks; did you make any special preparation before the match?) "Last year, there were many times when Dominican balls went behind the block, so this time I tried to always keep in mind that when I jump I must stop the ball. Also paid attention to make sure I kept my proper form for blocking."

Japan No. 12 Saori Kimura: "I'm happy about the win, but there were many mistakes as a team and also as individuals, so we will improve those points and do our best tomorrow."

Dominican Republic coach Marcos Kwiek: "I was really disappointed to lose the game, but although we have many young players it was good to play against Japan. Our passing and defending didn't go well. If we'd been better on those points, we might have gone to five sets. The team is heading in the right direction but we need to improve certain points and keep working on our game."

Dominican Republic captain Karla Echenique: "For us, we lacked concentration, partly because we have so many young players, so we need to improve this. It was a close match, but we lost."
