Sao Carlos, Brazil, August 7 – FIVB World Grand Champions Cup winner Italy picked up their first win of the FIVB World Grand Prix 2010 on Saturday with a straight sets (25-15, 25-20 and 25-19) win over Chinese Taipei in Sao Carlos, Brazil.
With the result, the European side collected their first three points in the Pool A following their shock loss to Japan on Friday.
Italian opposite Ortolani led all scorers, with 15 points while Chinese Taipei's middle-blocker Tsai scored seven.
Taking advantage of the rivals’ lack of experience, Italy had little trouble taking an early lead. The Asian side tried to react with their serve and a good defensive system, but were unable to stop Barcellini, who helped the European side pick up the set.
With the support of the Brazilian fans, Chinese Taipei improved in the second set, showing unexpected blocking power. However Italy's technical skills helped see them pick up the second set.
Led by Ortolani, Italy maintained their safe lead in the third and final frame to easily see out the game.
In their last match day Italy face host Brazil while Japan and Chinese Taipei will play in an all-Asian match showdown.
