Pinheiros Mackenzie edge Dominicans in Salonpas Cup

Brazilian Daniele Oliveira prepares to spike against the Dominicans

Sao Paulo, Brazil, October 1, 2008 - The tiny Thais Souza literally elevated her game while carrying Brazilians Pinheiros Mackenzie to a 3-2 victory over Dominicans Centro Deportivo Nacional as the women's Salonpas Cup continued.

Souza, generously listed at 1.74 meters, scored 30 points in the local club's 16-25, 25-22, 25-22, 22-25, 15-11 win, improving them to 2-1 and sending the Dominican squad to a 0-3 mark, practically ousting them from the final phase.

Tandara Caixeta and Fernanda Tome contributed 17 and nine points, respectively, to the success achieved in 2 hours, 2 minutes. For the Dominican side, Bethania de la Cruz scored 25, Sidarka Nunez 14, Cindy Rondon 13 and Lisvel Eve nine.

In the second game of the night, Italians Scavolini Pesaro defeated Sao Paulo's Finasa-Osasco 25-12, 25-20, 25-18. The victory enabled the winners to improve their record to 3-1 while the losers are now at 2-2.

Carolina Costagrande was top scorer for the Italian champions with 13 points, Katarzyna Skowronska followed with 12 and Martina Guiggi added 10. Juliana Castro and Paula Pequeño had nine and eight points, respectively, for the Brazilians.

On Thursday, Centro Deportivo Nacional play against Kinder Voleibol and Finasa-Osaco meet unbeaten Rexona-Ades.
