Dominican Republic win gold medal at Women's Pan Am Cup and claim World Grand Prix 2009 berth alongside Puerto Rico, USA and Brazil

Dominicans and Brazilians battle

Mexicali, Mexico, June 7, 2008 - The Dominican Republic won a sensational five-setter over Brazil to take home the gold medal in the Women’s Pan American Cup. Middle blocker Cindy Rondon scored with one of her 13 blocks for the final point of the match that capped nine days of exciting Volleyball. The score was 26-24, 30-28, 22-25, 19-25, 15-11.

Bethania de la Cruz and Rondon scored 24 and 23 points, respectively, to lead the new champions. Sidarka Nunez contributed 19 points and Milagros Cabral and Annerys Vargas chipped in 11 and 10, respectively. Brazilian Regiane Bidias topped all the scorers with 25.

Argentina won the bronze medal by defeating Puerto Rico 3-1 (26-24, 25-18, 16-25, 25-18). Three players, Yamila Nizetich, Georgina Klug and Georgina Pinedo, contributed 12 points to the Argentine triumph. Ileana Leyendeker added nine, including five blocks.

One day after qualifying for the 2009 FIVB World Grand Prix, the USA Team had to battle for five sets to defeat Venezuela and finish in fifth position. The score was 27-25, 28-26, 17-25, 22-25, 15-7. Alexis Crimes, Alexandra Klineman and Tracy Stalls each scored 15 points for USA.

In the other match on Saturday, Peru edged a resilient Canada team in five sets in the match for seventh position. The score was 26-24, 25-12, 23-25, 18-25, 15-6.

The Women's Pan American Cup is a FIVB World Grand Prix qualifier and thanks to their results, Dominican Republic, Brazil, Puerto Rico and United States will participate in next year's edition of the FIVB's premier annual Women's event.
