Team profile

The Korean Women's National Team has been characterized by its quick combination play and mental power, but for the last few years the team has been trying to add power and height to follow the worldwide trend in Women's Volleyball.

The team's results at recent major international tournaments were not satisfactory for Korean Volleyball or its fans.

They finished eighth at the 2007 FIVB World Cup, fourth at the 2007 Asian Championship, fifth in the 2006 Asian Games and 13th at the 2006 FIVB World Championship.

Most disappointingly, the team failed to qualify for the 2008 Beijing Olympics after an unexpectedly poor performance at the World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Japan. However, the team finished second at the 1st AVC Cup the same year.

Kim Sa-Nee and Kim Yeon-Koung have returned as the national team's setter and main spiker, respectively. Young players Lee Bo-Lam, Kim Hee-Jin, and Na Hyun-Jung will make their international debuts at the 2009 World Grand Prix.

Korea is participating in the Grand Prix after a two-year absence. The team is looking to gain valuable experience at the tournament against world-class teams such as Brazil, Russia and China. Korea hopes the strong competition will help the players improve as they head toward the 2010 Asian Games and 2012 London Olympics.

Coach profile

Lee Sung-Hee, 41, was a setter for the Men's National Team in the 1990s at many international competitions, including the World championship, Olympics, World League and Asian Games.

Lee won the gold medal at the 1987 World Junior Championship in Bahrain.

The Korean Volleyball Association named Lee head coach of the Women's National Team following the Qualifying Tournament for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

As an assistant coach of GS Caltex Women's Club Team, Lee steered the side to the championship crown while the team's head coach was receiving medical treatment throughout the season. Lee was then promoted to head coach of the club and months later became head coach of the National Women's Team.

While Lee is new to the National Team, the KVA is expecting big things from him and the players.
