At the very beginning of the first set, the Germany and Italy teams played point to point without giving each other a pause. Italy tried to catch up with concrete blocks and powerful attacks. Italy gained the match by leading 5 points with sparkling performance of #9, Nadia Centoni.

Italy hammered the young Dominican Republic
The relative fresh Dominican Republic team showed remarkable valiant strength in front of the vigorous Italian players. Italy had sufficient power to widen a gap before the second technical timeout. The weak defence created by the Dominican Republic further allowed Italy to widen the gap more. Team spirit in Dominican Republic came back towards the end of first set, yet Italy signed the first set at 25:21.

Germany failed to stop China's fierce attack
The German players tried to fight back in the third set and scored three points ahead China before the first technical timeout. China was forced to call a timeout so as to regain the form. Germany did not allow the Chinese players to narrow the margin by a series of aggressive attacks and solid defence. Germany had put China under tight position and a second timeout was requested. With the strongest mentality and tactful strategies led to China's glorious triumph.

Dominican Republic got the first victory!
It was certainly the most critical fifth set that decided the third place in the Hong Kong leg. Both teams showed great fortitude in winning today's game. After some spectacular performance and great excitement, the Dominican Republic team, which delivered powerful serves, spectacular spikes and solid blocks finally won the third place!

Italy defeated China in three straight sets.
Despite the advantage of getting the previous two sets, the Italy players did not lose their focus. Italy earned each point with cautious and tactful teamwork and they appeared even more focus instead. With great effort, China clinched Italy to 15:15 with the encouraging support of the spectators and the China substitutes players in the warming-up area. The first timeout in the set was called immediately right after unforced serving error made by China. China managed to pull back to 19 all. However, Italy gained three straight points with credit to the powerful serves by #3 Elisa Cella. Showing no mercy to the host team, Italy continued its attacks relentlessly to win the set and the exciting match.

Fired-up USA survived a sturdy challenge from Thailand, powering past the host girls in a hard-fought four-set thriller.
Learning that two wins in the Bangkok leg will secure them a place in the July 13-18 finals in Sendai, Japan, the American girls started the curtain-raiser preliminaries Group I match against hosts Thailand aggressively, with devastating left-hander Nancy Metcalf impenetrating penetrating the Thai defence with her spectacular spikes to help the team lead 4-1. USA took the comfortable first set 25-14.

In the more thrilling second set, the Thai girls, despite the height disadvantage, counter-attacked gallantly. Pleumjit entertained a large crowd of cheering home fans inside The Mall Bangkapi's MCC Hall with her exceptional expertise to win several points for her team. But USA won in the 2nd set 25-20.

Thailand had nothing to lose in the third set and just poured everything they had. Their great effort bore fruits later on as they led commandingly 16-9, thanks largely to Pleumjit's terrific jump serves and her scintillating come-from-behind spikes and Thailand won the first set in the tournament 25-13.

Although cheered on by a large crowd of their fans, a spirited Japan went down a mighty clash to devastating Poland in strai
After suffering the straight-set loss to Japan in the first leg on the rivals' home soil, Poland got their solid starters which included hard-attackers Maria Liktoras, 191cm, and Belcik Izabela in the match against the same rivals. Both sides started strongly, but Poland won the thrilling first set 25-22.

Their confidence boosted after the first-set win, Poland continued their superb form in the second set. Sharp spikes from Skowronska and Liktoras also kept the Japanese players flat-footed several times. As Poland took an initial 16-13 lead, Japanese fans cheered on their team lustily "Nippon, but Poland won the hard-fought second set 25-23.

Going down two straight sets, Japan regrouped to play a better game to lead 8-4 before the Polish girls bounced back mightily, with Liktoras uncorking a series of hard attacks. It was a see-saw battle from the beginning of the set, finally Poland won the exciting set 25-22.
