Japan beat Thailand 3-1 (23-25 25-22 25-17 25-22)
It was an all-Asians battle. Both Thailand and Japan started aggressively from the very beginning of the first set. Both sides took turns spiking and blocking, using their Asian volleyball styles of come-from-behind spikes and terrific jump serves. As the score was tied at 18-18, Thailand, cheered on by a large crowd of screaming home girls, showed their consistent play. Pleumjit Thinkeow and Amporn Hyapha combined well to spiking devastatingly at the net to help the team capture the hard-fought first set 25-23.

After losing one set, Japan improved their tactics, utilising fast spikes from Ai Otomo and Sachiko Sugiyama to take a narrow 12-11 lead. The host side tried to regain their composure, with Pluemjit producing several jump serves and Piyamas Koijapo and Patcharee Sangmuang tightening their defence with good blocks. As Thailand came near at 22-23, the Japanese continued their sparkling form to win the set 25-22.

Thailand initially suffered on poor serving and spiking in the third set, while Japan dramatically stormed on their powerful hits. The Japanese comfortably clinched the set 25-17. The visitors still rolled on their rhythm in the fourth set, where Thailand, despite mounting a strong challenge, went down the thriller 25-22
