Player's Profile

Yimei Wang

I Will Do Better

The 17-year-old from the Liaoning Province is one of China’s brightest young stars. She only started playing Volleyball five years ago, and the fact that she has already made her debut in the Chinese Women's Volleyball team has some fans saying; "Perhaps she is really a Volleyball genius!"

At 190cm tall, the former swimmer is regarded as the new Lang Ping (China’s hero of the 1980’s who was nicknamed Iron Hammer) in the Chinese team and fans had their first chance to see this exciting talent in NingBo.

"This is my first participation in the World Grand Prix, but I am not nervous,” she said. “I do not have too many big ideas, I only want to play the well during the competition."

While the prospect of playing against the world’s best players could be seen as a problem, Yimei’s weight was more of a concern until recently. Thanks to a diet with the help of the team doctor, she has now lost seven kilograms and jumps much higher than three months ago.

This saw Yimei start all the matches in Ningbo apart from the match against USA where her place was taken by Chu Jinling and Yimei understands her position in the team and the fact that her selection is not guaranteed. "We are all rookies,” she said. “It is very normal for the coach to arrange our starting lineup early on in the piece. One has to prepare psychologically also.”
