Cuba got off to a rousing start by posting a 3-0 victory over Thailand (25-19, 25-17, 25-17)
Cuba displayed its brilliant form and scored a straight-sets victory over Thailand, 25-19, 25-17, 25-17.

Nancy Carillo dela Paz shone for the three-time Olympic champions Cuba, coming up with 21 points from an impressive all-around game.

Team captain Yumilka Luaces Ruiz and Daimi Echevarria Ramirez delivered the points in the first two sets, finishing with nine points each. Rosir Diaz Calderon had six points while Liana Luaces Mesa added five points.

The Cubans used both veterans and new players in the first two sets and in the third set, knowing that they are in control of the match, the new players were given more playing time.

Thailand, despite having inexperienced players, put up a good fight in the third set and took the lead twice, the last at 13-12, before Cuba bounced back to regain control and win the match.

Apinyapong Wilawan led the Thais with 12 kills while Thinkaow Pleumjit contributed six points, including four blocks. Also contributing to Thailand's solid defense was Ampronnnn Hyapha, who had six points.
