Chin rallies past Netherlands 3-1 (21-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-5)
China rallied from one set down to beat the Netherlands 3-1 on Saturday for its second straight win at the 2005 World Grand Prix women's volleyball tournament Ningbo leg.
The Dutchwomen, 3-0 winners over the United States on Friday, started well against the Olympic and World Cup double champion. With Francien Huurman and Ingrid Visser hitting from the middle and Chaine Staelens and Manon Flier striking from two sides, the Netherlands stayed close early in the first set before overtaking the lead at 14-11.
China managed to pull it back at 18-all, but the Dutch women ran off three straight points to make it 21-18, a gap the Chinese women could never close.
Head coach Chen Zhonghe replaced the 18-year-old Ma Yunwen with Olympic medalist Zhang Ping in the second set and the substitution took effect right away. On back of powerful services of Zhang, China staged a 5-0 run for a 14-8 lead and held on to pull one set back at 25-17.
China raced to a 16-11 lead in the third set before the Netherlands struggled to cut its deficit to 22-21. Trailing at 23-22, the Dutch women made two consecutive errors to surrender the set.
In the fourth set, the Chinese continued their winning momentum, powering to the victory with ace spiker Yang Hao concluding the match with an ace.
