U.S. loses Grand Prix opener to Netherlands 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-17)

The United States lost to the Netherlands 3-0 in the opening match of the Ningbo leg competition of 2005 World Grand Prix women's volleyball tournament.

Led by Chinese volleyball legend Lang Ping, the newly formed American team did its best, but the Netherlands were obviously more experienced and playing more like a team.

The American opened with a 5-2 lead in the first set, but the Netherlands had a 5-0 run to overtake the advantage at 9-7. Then the Dutch women surged away from a 12-12 tie to go up 19-13 and never looked back.

In the second set, the Americans stayed within 16-13 before the Netherlands ran off nine of the last ten points to make it two sets to nil.

The United States fought back early in the third set as they built a 9-6 lead and held it to 15-13. However, they faded again to allow the Dutch side seal its opening victory at the four-team tournament in less than one hour.
