World silver medallists USA took a big step towards the final round today by defeating Olympic silver medallists Russia 3-1 (25-13, 21-25, 25-21, 25-15) thus making it 5-2 victories altogether in this World Grand Prix. Logan Tom was best scorer with 20 points.

Germany gains first victory at home over Thailand
The German team gained their first victory in their opening match of the 2004 World Grand Prix in Rostock with a 3-1 (25-14, 25-20, 23-25, 25-22) over outsiders Thailand. With this win the Germans are now tied by points with Russia and Poland in the general rankings. Best scorers were Judith Sylvester with 21 points for Germany and Patcharee Sangmuang and Amporn Hyapha with 12 points for Thailand.

USA ensure final round by defeating Thailand 3-2
The USA ensured their ticket to the final round of the 2004 World Grand Prix in Reggio Calabria by defeating Thailand 3-2 (25-17, 25-20, 22-25, 22-25, 15-5), their third successive victory over Thailand in the 2004 Grand Prix series. The team of head coach Toshiaki Yoshida now boast six wins and just two losses cannot be push out of the first five places in the general ranking. The best scorer for the USA was Tayyiba Haneef with 16 points, and for Thailand Patcharee Sangmuang with 19 points.

Hard-fought German 3-2 win over Russia
Germany ensured sixth place in the general ranking of the 2004 World Grand Prix by defeating Russia 3-2 (25-28, 16-25, 27-29, 28-26, 15-12) thus taking revenge for the 3-0 defeat by Russia a week ago in Jakarta. This place would be sufficient to get them to the final round in Reggio Calabria, Italy, next week. On Saturday the final decision will be taken in the matches RUS-THA and GER-USA. The best scorer for Germany was Angelina Grün with 21 points, and for Russia Natalia Safronova with 26 points.

Russia overpowered Thailand 3-1
Russia kept its chance alive to make the final round of the six best teams next week in Reggio Calabria, Italy, by overpowering Thailand 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 27-25, 25-17) in their last preliminary match in Rostock, Germany. If Germany lose to the USA in the last match, coach Mikhail Omelchenko's team would travel to Italy. Best scorers were Natalia Safronova with 20 points for Russia and Nurak Nokputta with 21 points for Thailand.

Germany reached the Final Round
Germany was the last team to qualify for the final round of the 2004 World Grand Prix to take place in Reggio Calabria, Italy, next week by defeating the USA 3-2 (25-23, 21-25, 16-25, 25-17, 15-12). It was Germany's first victory over the reigning World silver medallists in ten years (1994 World Championship). 1,700 fans celebrated Germany's win enthusiastically in Rostock. Poland is proved to be a very promising team by beating Italy 3-0 in Match 43 of the WGP. The match between Italy and Poland is the first show of the premier annual event FIVB in Hefei phase and turns out to be both a very exciting and maintaining start on Hong sanhuan Gym in Hefei.

China won over Dominican Republic comfortably. With warm support from the spectators, China impressed her country fellows with their skills and strength. Well-orchestrated, multi-dimensional attacks and defense let China defeat Dominican Republic relaxingly in the first match back in the mainland. Dominican Republic played hard but made too many errors leading to their loss. Match 44 ended with a 3-0 result.

Both team played well. The match was exciting. Italy seemed to recover from yesterday's loss to Poland. After winning the first set, Italy laid a foundation to the victory. Sharp attacks of Team Dominican Republic demonstrated its strength, but failed to stop the Italians from winning the 45th match 3-1 in one hour forty five minutes.

Team cohesion and well-defined attacker-setter coordination supplied team Dominican Republic with a good performance. However, Poland played more steadily. After dropping the first set, they won the set second and extended their strong performance to the end of the match. Match 47 ended 3-1 in favor of Poland.

Both teams came out with superb form, refusing to five the other side chances to hit back. The game turned a hard-fought battle, as China tried hard to catch up. However, with vigorous attacks and teamwork, the Italian team managed to clinch the match 3-1.

In the beginning of the game Cuba team made serve mistakes but from the middle of game, as they were recover power in servce and blocking and attack, they refused the chase of Korea team.
Korea team showed progress in the field of technique and teamwork in the match compared to the matches of the last preliminary round in Philippines.

JPN won against a long time Asian rival, KOR with a set score 3:1.
It was very exciting game between two Asian rivals, JPN vs. KOR in front of crowded fans. JPN started a game with strong services and effective team plays. But, KOR had too many unforced errors in the backcourt play, resulting in a lose against JPN.
